What'll Be Great In 2008

To put it simply, what is everybody excited about this year that's hitting the local theater? And no, "I don't know what's coming out" is NOT an acceptable answer. The IMDB
is there for a reason, and nobody on this blog has severed fingers (the last time I checked, anyway.)

I'm kid-at-Christmas excited about WALL-E, the new Pixar movie about a robot discovering the meaning of life.

I'm pretty intrigued by Get Smart, just because Steve Carrell's been so consistently good. (Yes, I've completely forgotten about Evan Almighty.)

I'm cautiously optimistic about Hancock, which IMDB describes thusly: "An apathetic, hard-living superhero (Smith) who has fallen out of favor with the public is approached by a public relations professional (Bateman) who has ideas as to how he can repair his client's image." I like Jason Bateman, and the superhero genre is ripe for parody, so there's some promise there.

The Dark Knight, of course, is on a short list of must-see summer movies for me, since we all agreed that its predecessor was so rocktacular.

I hold out a glimmer of hope for Step Brothers, the new Will Ferrell-John C. Reilly project, though Will Ferrell may be wearing out his welcome with America.

And then, of course, there's the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.

i'm excited about three things that DW did not mention: Pineapple Express, American Teen, and My Sister's Keeper.

Pineapple Express is the new Seth Rogun offering, and he's turning into a mini-Judd Apatow. it stars Rogun and his Freaks and Geeks buddy James Franco as (what else?) potheads who witness a murder. the subject matter might be a little heavy for a comedy, and we'll see how Rogun does.

American Teen is a documentary about a year in the life of five high school seniors. the movie doesn't even try to shy away from comparisons to The Breakfast Club, but rather welcomes them; it even made its poster in the same configuration as that movie. i give it some points for that.

My Sister's Keeper is based on the fabulous Jodi Picoult novel, and has some real pedigrees in it, being Abigail Breslin, Alec Baldwin and Joan Cusack. let's hope Cameron Diaz doesn't screw it up too much.

and of course, The Dark Knight and WALL-E.

I am looking forward to the Chronicles of Narnia, Indiana Jones, Get Smart, Wall E, Dark Knight, and I am sure there are more that I don't know about. In other words I fully plan to enjoy many movies while not having to worry about homework.

The Dark Knight is hands down what I'm looking forward to the most, followed closely by The Punisher: War Zone. The rare instance of a sequel that looks better than the original with a better director (Lexi Alexander vs Jonathan Hensleigh), better lead actor (Ray Stevenson vs Thomas Jane), and a better sounding script. It looks like a great year for comic fans with the above, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man coming out.

I can't wait for David Mamet's Redbelt. An intelligent martial arts drama is long overdue.

I know it would suck big time, but he's the stuff my childhood dreams were made of: Indy 4.
Other than that, I am well aware of the best films being the lesser hyped ones (they don't need the hype), so I'll just comfortably wait for the better films to come and surprise me.

You know it would suck big time, or it will suck big time? That's......that's really confusing.

Mmmm, speaking of lesser-hyped, I'm really looking forward to Repo! The Genetic Opera. I can't decide from the trailer whether or not it's going to be brilliant or completely abysmal, but Anthony Stewart Head? In
a leading role? In a heavy-metal musical? All I have to say to that is
Yes, and Please!
